The Blood Vote

An exploration of the suffragist and modernist movements through music and circus, featuring opera singers, circus performers, and string quartet.

Gasworks Arts Park at 9PM 11-14 October 2023

Project Overview

Composer Jenny Game, librettist Caitlin Vincent, and directors Jamie Henson collaborated on The Blood Vote, a compelling new circus opera premiere at the Melbourne Fringe Festival in October 2023.

Tracing the contradictions of modernity through the lens of the early twentieth-century suffragist and modernist movements, the opera explores the tensions between social equality and technological advancement, asking when – and whether – progress can become a corrupting force.

Transgressing notions of high and low art, The Blood Vote celebrates the skills and training of both the human body and the human voice, generating a spectacular immediacy and compelling theatrical experience for the audience.

This project received Cash to Create through the Fringe Fund.

"Game’s vocal score for soprano and bass brings voice-type opposites into play with overall pleasing results,
a score notably attentive to the opportunity for humanity and poignancy to shine through"
